Trees and woodlands are at the heart of our landscapes across England. They provide a unique and diverse habitat for thousands of species, capture carbon, help to tackle the effects of climate change, and improve our land, all while connecting us to green spaces, supporting our health and wellbeing. These woodlands are not just part of our environment; they are an essential part of our heritage and a lifeline for future generations.

Last week, we were excited to launch our new Woodland Ambassador programme - a programme that will connect farmers, landowners, and industry professionals with similar goals to support woodland creation and management.

Steph Rhodes, Delivery Director at the Forestry Commission said:

By working together, we can ensure that our woodlands, and the many benefits they deliver for the environment, our communities, and the economy, endure for future generations. The Woodland Ambassador programme is a fantastic example of that drive and commitment to working together.

The Woodland Ambassadors are a diverse group of individuals who share a passion for trees, woodlands, and forests. From your local farmer with generational knowledge and experience to an industry professional who understands the intricacies of woodland management, our ambassadors bring a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for trees to the table.

Each ambassador is committed to:

  1. Enhancing woodland cover. By becoming part of the nationwide effort to enhance woodland cover in England, the ambassadors aim to bring benefits to their communities as well as to the environment.
  2. Improving understanding of trees, woodlands, and forestry. By collaborating closely with the Forestry Commission to support and promote the benefits of trees for agriculture and the environment, the ambassadors share the knowledge they've gained from their own experiences, making the learning process more relatable and accessible.
  3. Sharing their experiences. The ambassadors actively participate in events, host farm and woodland walks, and consistently share their expertise. Whether it's through workshops, seminars, or informal discussions, our ambassadors are committed to sharing their insights and lessons learned with others.
  4. Supporting the community. Each ambassador understands the benefit of knowledge exchange and the importance of community support. By sharing their skills with others, they hope to inspire and guide landowners who are considering woodland creation, fostering a sense of stewardship.
Scattered across England, our Woodland Ambassadors work closely with Forestry Commission regional teams. These dedicated individuals are neighbours, friends, and your fellow community members, all committed to making a meaningful difference.

Over the coming months, we'll be sharing individual profiles of each ambassador, but for now you can read about them on our Woodland Ambassador GOV.UK page. Their range of backgrounds and experiences represent the diversity in how woodland can integrate with your land.
